It is no secret that singer John Mayer loves to live a good life, and that includes a love for watches.
John is as serious a watch lover. In fact, he’s downright obsessive. And while Patek and Rolex might dominate his main selection these days, he loves all watches, from top to bottom. Here we’ll give you a quick look at some of his favorites.
PATEK PHILIPPE 5164A
This is the Aquanaut Travel Time. The Aquanaut comes on a rubber strap, which might sound like sacrilege to some Patek lovers, but consider the fact that he’s performing (read as “sweating intensely” for several hours, five nights of the week) it’s perfect. His is also Tiffany-signed.
ROLEX GMT-MASTER 116710 BLNR
The other watch that he takes on tour with him is another modern travel time – the Rolex GMT-Master II Reference 116710BLNR. Again, a simple modern watch with travel time functionality that he can easily wear on stage. He calls this one the best contemporary movements Rolex makes.
IWC BIG PILOT REF 5002
This is a watch that is often associated with John. He’s owned it for over ten years and it was one of his favorite watches for many of them. This is a watch that lives outside the big watch trend. You will find a lot of pictures of John wearing this one on and off stage.
IWC AQUATIMER JACQUES COUSTEAU
Everyone needs a great vacation watch. This is John’s. Nothing special about it really, he just loves it. Sometimes that’s all it takes, right?
ROLEX SUBMARINER REFERENCE 1680 ISSUED TO COMEX
COMEX-issued dive watches are actually not that uncommon. Obviously they are much, much more rare than your normal commercial Rolex diver, but there is really a well established market for the COMEX-issued 5513s, 5514s, and more modern references. This is a very cool watch, and John says that “this is a watch that nobody would ever look at twice, unless they knew exactly what it was”.
ROLEX MILITARY SUBMARINER REFERENCE 5517
This is a reference 5517 “MilSub” that just has a beautiful look to it. It’s one of his personal favorite watches, while it may cost quite a bit today, this is one watch you can treat as casually as you like. Nothing you can do to it will be worse than what its already lived through.
ROLEX COSMOGRAPH DAYTONA 6263
The Daytona 6263 is one of the absolute best watches ever made and John agrees. This is a no-nonsense chronograph with a basic Valjoux-based movement, screw-down pushers, and black acrylic bezel.
PATEK PHILIPPE 5970G
Finally, we have the 6263 of the world of Patek Philippe. The 5970 is, again, one of the best watches, from top to bottom, ever made. This watch pre-dates the in-house 5270 and uses a Lemania-based movement, and according to many collectors it is really one of the finest watches a man can buy.
