At the Dutch Mondrian Doha hotel, interior designer Marcel Wanders has created a surreal vibe, with a modern and yet very grotesque room design, which Wanders himself describes as “a place of fantasy”. Designed by local firm South West Architecture for the hospitality company SBE, this luxury hotel, which has been opened since October 2017, is shortlisted in the Event Spaces category at the upcoming AHEAD MEA 2018 awards.
Wanders’ Amsterdam-based studio created the interiors for the 270-room hotel, which features a number of grand, surreal and authentic spaces in his distinctive maximalist style. The idea behind the design was to make the visitor wander and dream, surrounded by a magical place where extravagant luxury furniture complete the decoration.
A tea room is illuminated by excentric white trees and chandeliers hanging from the ceiling, a piece of a heavenly look while the swimming pool is covered by a floral-patterned stained-glass dome.
Wanders created a shisha lounge that is almost entirely black and white but features hundreds of colourful glass lanterns suspended from the ceiling. Pops of colour fill the interior design of the room, with an abysmal number of pendant lights. This is just one more of the hotel’s features created to make the place a visitation point for the locals and a wonderful destination for foreigners.
